Ascend Aoraki 2025

More than 150 people filled Fraser Park for this year’s Ascend Aoraki, it was an evening that celebrated the growing spirit of giving in South Canterbury. Conversations flowed easily between donors, community groups and partners as everyone gathered to look back on a busy year of the Aoraki Foundation and imagine what’s possible next.

Aoraki Foundation CEO Richard Spackman walked the room through twelve months of highlights, then shared the Foundation’s vision— to distribute $1 million each year to local causes by 2030. He was clear that the target isn’t something the Foundation can reach alone; it will take local organisations, businesses and everyday people working together to turn that ambition into real community impact.

Aoraki Foundation Trustee Claire Barlow used the night to relaunch Friends of Aoraki, a straightforward way for supporters to help cover the Foundation’s operating costs so more of the income from funds can go straight back into the community. Friends choose their level of support, typically between $500 and $1,000 a year, and both individuals and businesses can access a tax deduction or a 33% rebate. Those who wish can be named on the Foundation’s website and receive newsletters and annual reports.

After a short break for drinks and delicious nibbles from TNR Events, guests reassembled for the keynote. Aoraki Foundation Chairperson Greg Anderson introduced Gary Rooney, whose talk challenged everyone to think differently about how we uplift our communities. Gary pushed for bolder ideas and new ways of working, leaving the room with plenty to mull over.

By the night’s end there was a real sense of possibility in the air. With a clear goal, renewed support through Friends of Aoraki, and fresh thinking to guide future work, Ascend Aoraki left people feeling energised and ready to keep building momentum for the region they love.
