Recipient Story: Well Balanced
Age Concern South Canterbury
Growing older doesn’t mean slowing down—and thanks to a travelling initiative from Age Concern South Canterbury, many older adults in our region discovered just how powerful small movements can be.
The Well Balanced Exhibition and Roadshow rolled out across South Canterbury in October and November 2024, stopping in Waimate, Fairlie, Twizel, and Timaru. At each venue, hall spaces were transformed into interactive wellness zones—full of laughter, encouragement, and the occasional friendly wobble.
Designed especially for those over 65, the programme focused on improving strength, flexibility, and balance—vital tools for maintaining independence and preventing falls. Eleven activity stations invited visitors to stretch, squeeze, and sway their way to greater body confidence, with wobble boards, hoop fitness, hand grippers, and more. Between exercises, participants explored engaging banners that shared simple but powerful messages: your balance matters, and it’s never too late to start.
For many, the roadshow was more than just a set of exercises. It was a reminder that aging well is possible—and that joy, connection, and movement go hand in hand. One volunteer noted how uplifting it was to see participants leave smiling, some with new goals, and others signing up for local Steady As You Go (SAYGO) classes.
In total, 120 people took part, supported by 11 volunteers, and 95% of attendees were aged over 65. But the true success of the programme lies in its ripple effect—empowering individuals to stay active, connected, and confident in their everyday lives.
How the Aoraki Foundation helped:
The Aoraki Foundation supported Age Concern South Canterbury with a $3,000 grant from the South Canterbury Health Endowment Fund. This funding helped bring the Well Balanced Exhibition to life—supporting healthy ageing across our region, one steady step at a time.
