A gift heard by the community

For more than 70 years, the Hearing Association South Canterbury played a vital role in supporting people with hearing impairment across our region. Established in 1954, the Association worked to promote the wellbeing of those experiencing hearing loss, advocating for better outcomes and helping individuals remain connected to their families, workplaces, and communities.

In 2024, after decades of dedicated service, the Association’s members made the difficult but considered decision to wind up their operations. Like many long-standing volunteer organisations, they faced the reality of changing times, an ageing membership and increasing challenges in sustaining the services they had faithfully delivered for generations.

Rather than see their remaining resources diminish over time, the Association chose a different path—one that would honour their legacy while continuing their mission. They partnered with the Aoraki Foundation to establish the Hearing South Canterbury Fund, ensuring their funds would be protected, grown, and distributed for lasting community benefit.

The Hearing South Canterbury Fund carries forward the Association’s original purpose: to support people with hearing impairment across South Canterbury.

Through this fund, grants will help provide access to hearing aids. A key focus is supporting individuals and families experiencing financial hardship—helping ensure that the ability to hear and engage is not limited by cost.

By establishing an endowment fund, the Association has created something enduring. The capital is invested and protected, with annual distributions providing ongoing support year after year. This means the impact of the Association’s work will continue—not just for today’s community, but for future generations.

It is a lasting legacy of care, foresight, and deep commitment to the people of South Canterbury.
