Donor Story: Annie & Russell

Annie and Russell both hail from South Canterbury. Russell grew up in Timaru, the son of a hardworking entrepreneurial family. Annie’s childhood in Geraldine revolved around life on the farm, where long days and big chores were simply part of the routine. From an early age, they learned that grit and determination go hand-in-hand.

Russell’s first job was in the Timaru hospital shop while Annie took on reception and bookkeeping in town before setting off on an OE to Australia. Russell joined the family wines and spirits business, rising to manage South Canterbury trade sales. Annie returned to support her mother and then built her own career in office administration and business sales.

In 1990, Russell struck out on his own, importing liquor at competitive prices and later distributing boutique wines for small vineyards. Together they launched Basketique, selling personalised gift baskets—and in their best year produced over 28,500 hampers. A return south in 2001 led to new ventures in gelato, nougat and cinnamon-sugar mini-donuts, each project fuelled by their entrepreneurial spark.

Throughout every move, Annie and Russell remained deeply involved in community life. From driving the Geraldine community bus to serving with the Timaru Host Lions Club, they’ve given their time and talents wherever needed. It was through Lions that they met Richard and Kirsty of the Aoraki Foundation and discovered a shared vision for South Canterbury’s future.

To create a lasting contribution, Annie and Russell established the Annie and Russell Cowles Endowment Fund with the Aoraki Foundation. Their gift will support the causes they care about, strengthening the community they’ve called home for generations.
