Rosemary and Dale’s story is one of gratitude and a commitment to making life better for others.

For Rosemary, the roots of that commitment go back to her childhood. After losing her father at a young age, she watched her mother navigate the challenges of raising a family of five children with limited support. Although there were occasional acts of kindness from community organisations, much of the burden fell on the family itself. Starting school without the basic literacy skills many other children already had left Rosemary feeling behind from the outset, an experience that would stay with her for life.

Those early struggles shaped her belief that every child deserves the best possible start. She is particularly passionate about early childhood education and ensuring vulnerable families can access the support they need. While services have improved over the years, she still sees many families struggling to find their way through a complex system. Too often, she believes, people need someone to guide them and stay alongside them rather than offering only short-term help.

Dale’s commitment to philanthropy was shaped by different experiences but led him to similar conclusions. Growing up in a family that valued community involvement, he learned early that helping others was simply part of life. Together, he and Rosemary see giving as a way of repaying the support they have received and helping create opportunities for future generations.

Their belief in community action extends far beyond financial giving. Both emphasise that time and involvement can be just as valuable as money. Through years of volunteering and community participation, they have seen the power of people coming together around a shared purpose. Dale often points to South Canterbury’s MRI project as an example of what can be achieved when local people take ownership of a challenge and work collectively towards a solution.

Today, surrounded by their two children and four beloved granddaughters, Rosemary and Dale remain focused on strengthening the community they have always called home. When they think about legacy, neither talks about recognition or achievements. They believe the most meaningful legacy is showing others that even small acts of generosity, compassion, and involvement can make a lasting difference.
