Supporting Second Chances
Momentum Charitable Trust - Supporting Second Chances through Life 101
In 2025, the Aoraki Foundation was pleased to support an application from Momentum Charitable Trust to deliver two one‑day Life101 programmes—Money & Me and Work‑Ready, World‑Ready—at the Timaru Probation Centre. The request aligned strongly with our vision of strengthening lives and futures across the Aoraki region.
These programmes are designed for individuals recently released from prison or serving community‑based sentences—people who often face complex barriers such as limited education, unstable housing, employment gaps, trauma, or addiction. Such challenges can make it difficult to plan ahead, manage finances, or engage with mainstream support services.
Life101 addresses these barriers through practical, accessible learning. Sessions cover essential life and work skills, including CV writing, interview preparation, job application processes, and managing anxiety around employment. Financial literacy is a major focus, with participants learning how to budget, save, manage debt, understand tax obligations, and plan for the future. All content is delivered in plain language, supported by visual aids, group discussion, and interactive activities that help build connection and trust.
A visit to the programme highlighted the strong impact of this approach. Participants were highly engaged and spoke openly about the difference the programme made for them. One attendee shared:
“I have done these courses in prison and it’s usually just to see something different than the faces and four walls that were the everyday norm. Doing this course because I actually want to is very different. I’ve got a lot of ideas out of it. I have written down some goals and a plan—I’ve never done that before.”
Life101’s strength‑based model shifts focus from past actions to future potential. By building confidence, self‑worth, and practical capability, the programmes support participants to re‑enter the community with renewed motivation. The group environment further encourages peer connection, allowing individuals to share experiences and learn from one another in a safe and supportive space.
The Aoraki Foundation is proud to have contributed to a programme that provides genuine opportunity for people seeking a new start. Empowering individuals to rebuild their lives not only transforms their own futures but strengthens the wellbeing of our entire community.
