Mollie Thomson

Born on 9 November 1934, Mollie Thomson was the only child of Lillian and Jim Thomson and spent her childhood on the family farm near Methven. Growing up in rural Mid Canterbury instilled in her a strong sense of community, service, and helping others that would remain with her throughout her life.

Mollie built a distinguished 41-year career in hospital administration, beginning at Ashburton Hospital in 1954. In 1972, she moved to Timaru to become Medical Records Officer for the South Canterbury Hospital Board. Dedicated to her profession, she later completed a Diploma of Health Administration before retiring in 1995.

After arriving in Timaru, Mollie became an active member of Trinity Presbyterian Church and soon began what would become a lifelong commitment to Presbyterian Support South Canterbury. In 1983, she joined the organisation's General Committee and, when a new governance structure was established in 1988, became a founding member of the Board.

Over the next 25 years, Mollie helped guide the organisation through significant change and growth. She was a passionate advocate for collaboration, believing regions could achieve more by working together. She represented South Canterbury at a national level and championed initiatives that strengthened support for older people, families, and communities throughout New Zealand.

Mollie was also deeply involved in the life of the organisation. She chaired the committee for Presbyterian Support South Canterbury's 75th anniversary celebrations in 1993 and remained a trusted source of knowledge and advice long after stepping down from the Board in 2013. In recognition of her outstanding service, she was awarded Life Membership that same year.

Guided by a strong Christian faith and a desire to serve others, Mollie believed in building stronger communities through kindness, compassion, and practical support. These values influenced both her life and the legacy she chose to leave.

When Mollie passed away in 2025, her generosity created the Presbyterian Support South Canterbury Fund. The fund will support the ongoing work of Presbyterian Support South Canterbury, ensuring future generations can continue to benefit from the care and services that meant so much to her.

Mollie's life was defined by service. Through the Presbyterian Support South Canterbury Fund, her commitment to helping people will continue to make a difference across South Canterbury for many years to come.
