Giving Hope, One Bucket at a Time

On Daffodil Day, bright yellow flowers aren't the only thing bringing colour to our community. Each year, Roncalli College students volunteer their time to collect donations for the Cancer Society, helping support people and families affected by cancer throughout New Zealand.

The school's involvement stretches back more than a decade, with around 24 Year 10 students volunteering each year. Students sign up for one-hour shifts, and every available spot is quickly filled.

For many students, the cause is a personal one. Teacher Sally Betts, who coordinates the service leaders, has experienced cancer herself, helping students understand the real difference the Cancer Society makes in people's lives.

Outside Dunroamin Dairy, students Martha Bravo and Sharn were having a busy morning.

"It's not just about getting out of school," said Martha. "It's really nice doing something positive for the Cancer Society. They are amazing."

The pair had already collected nearly a full bucket of donations, with Sharn joking that it was becoming so heavy they might soon need a replacement.

One street over, Amber Millington and Polly Hendry were collecting outside Roberts Pharmacy.

"It's a good place to stand with so many people coming and going," said Amber.

"Many people donate, or already have a sticker from donating elsewhere," added Polly, highlighting the generosity of the community.

While the students spend only an hour collecting, the impact of their contribution lasts much longer. Every donation helps fund cancer research, support services, and practical assistance for people facing cancer.

Generation Give celebrates young people like these Roncalli students who are choosing to give their time and energy to make a difference. Their commitment shows that generosity isn't measured by age or wealth. Sometimes, all it takes is an hour, a smile, and a willingness to help others.
