The Woman Behind the Newton Fund

Almost 50 years ago, Timaru resident Dorothy Newton made a decision that would continue to benefit her community long after her lifetime.

Born in South Australia in 1891, Dorothy arrived in New Zealand in 1923 seeking new opportunities and eventually made Timaru her home. She worked as a home furnishings consultant for H Shackell on Stafford Street. In 1931 she married accountant Edward Newton, whom she met in Dunedin, at the Bank Street Methodist Church. They resided at Kitchener Square, and together built a life centred on friendship, faith and community. The couple had no children, but Dorothy remained deeply connected to her family and friends.

After Edward's death in 1966, Dorothy spent her later years in Timaru, including a period living at Lions Court in Avenue Road. It was likely through this connection that she developed a relationship with the Lions Club of Timaru Host. When she passed away in 1979, Dorothy remembered family and friends in her will, supported several charitable causes, and then left the balance of her estate to the Lions Club for the general purposes of the organisation.

The value of that gift is now unknown, but the impact of Dorothy's generosity remains. Through careful stewardship by the Lions Club over many decades, her bequest was preserved and continued to support community good across South Canterbury.

Today, that legacy enters a new chapter. The Lions Club of Timaru Host has entrusted the Newton Fund to the Aoraki Foundation, ensuring Dorothy's gift will continue to be protected, grown and distributed for the benefit of future generations.

What began as one woman's desire to give back to her community has become a permanent source of support for South Canterbury. The Aoraki Foundation is honoured to act as a safe pair of hands for Dorothy's remarkable legacy, helping ensure her generosity continues to make a difference for now, and forever.
