Robert & Patricia Keeper

Some gifts are about looking back in gratitude while also looking forward with hope.

For Robert (Bert) and Patricia Keeper, their connection to the South Canterbury RSA reflected a lifelong appreciation for service, camaraderie, and community. Through a generous gift left in Patricia's will, the couple's legacy will now continue to support future generations of South Cantabrians.

Robert Charles Keeper served New Zealand during the Second World War as a member of the 21st Infantry Battalion. Enlisting in 1944, he joined thousands of New Zealanders who answered the call to serve their country during one of the most challenging periods in modern history. Originally from Timaru, Robert's service became an important part of a life remembered with pride by those who knew him.

As members of the South Canterbury RSA, Robert and Patricia shared a connection with an organisation dedicated to supporting serving and ex-service personnel and preserving the memory of those who have served. Their commitment to the RSA endured long after Robert's military service had ended.

In late 2021, following Patricia's passing, the South Canterbury RSA received a bequest of $100,000 from her estate. The gift was unrestricted, giving the RSA the opportunity to determine how it could create the greatest long-term benefit.

Rather than use the funds for immediate needs, the RSA chose to create a lasting legacy in honour of both Robert and Patricia. Working with the Aoraki Foundation, it established the South Canterbury RSA Keeper Fund, ensuring their generosity will continue to make a difference for generations to come.

The fund reflects the values that mattered to the Keepers. Income from the endowment will help support South Canterbury residents taking their first steps into service with the New Zealand Defence Force, assisting new recruits as they prepare for military training and the opportunities ahead.

"Robert served New Zealand in wartime. Patricia's generosity now helps future generations begin their own journey of service."

It is a fitting tribute. Robert's service to New Zealand is remembered, Patricia's generosity is honoured, and their shared commitment to supporting others lives on through a fund that will assist young South Cantabrians embarking on their own journey of service.

Today, the South Canterbury RSA Keeper Fund stands as a lasting reminder that service takes many forms. Robert served his country in uniform. Patricia served her community through generosity. Together, their legacy will help future generations answer their own call to serve, carrying the Keeper name forward for many years to come.
