Giving Tuesday at Castle Claremont
New Zealand has picked up a few American traditions in recent years. Some, like Black Friday sales, we could probably do without. But Giving Tuesday is one we at the Aoraki Foundation truly embrace. It’s a day to celebrate generosity in all its forms—whether that’s giving your time, your talent, or your treasure. Since 2022 we’ve marked Giving Tuesday with our donors and partners, and this year we were delighted to gather at the beautiful Castle Claremont.
The day began with a touch of rain, luckily that soon cleared and turned into a lovely day. The historic setting provided the perfect backdrop for more than 70 donors, supporters, and scholarship recipients to come together over afternoon tea.
Guests heard from Aoraki Foundation CEO Richard Spackman, who gave an overview of the year, followed by Eleanor Cater, CEO of Community Foundations Aotearoa New Zealand, who shared inspiring stories about philanthropy and the growing movement across the country and around the world.
A highlight of the day was the awarding of the 2025 scholarships:
Tiah Moore – Timaru Girls’ High School (Hubbard Churcher Scholarship)
Cody Wright – Opihi College (Hubbard Churcher Scholarship)
Jack Parry – Timaru Boys’ High School (St Andrews Youth Scholarship)
Jonty Porter – Timaru Boys’ High School (St Andrews Youth Scholarship)
It was wonderful to have the families of the recipients present to celebrate their achievements. In a moving finale, Tiah Moore closed the proceedings with a beautiful song that captured the spirit of the day.
After the formalities, guests enjoyed drinks and nibbles, posed for photos, and explored the Castle through guided tours.
We would also like to extend our heartfelt thanks to the volunteers who made the day possible:
Aoraki Foundation Trustees: Dale Walden, John Gregan, Claire Barlow, Jenny Carter-Bolitho, Greg Anderson, and Tom Lambie
Event Volunteers: Ginny Bolderston, Richard Brown (Property Brokers), Aleeshia Mitchell (KPMG), and Anastasia Andrianakis (KPMG)
We believe a lovely afternoon was had by all. It was a superb way to celebrate generosity and philanthropy in South Canterbury, and we are grateful to everyone who joined us to make Giving Tuesday 2025 so memorable.
